Restoring Notezilla Sticky Notes Data from Backup

  1. If you are not able to run Notezilla, skip steps 2, 3, 4 & 6. You can directly open the data folder by running %appdata%\Conceptworld\Notezilla from Windows start menu. Similarly, open backup folder %appdata%\Conceptworld\Notezilla\Backup from the Windows start menu. Note that these are default locations where Notezilla stores its data.
  2. To know where Notezilla stores the data, right click on Notezilla icon, choose Preferences from the menu and click on the Advanced tab.
  3. On the Advanced tab you will see “Data Folder” and “Backup Folder”. These are the locations where Notezilla stores its data and keeps 5 backup copies of its sticky notes data.
  4. Copy the data folder location from Advanced tab & open in Windows Explorer.
  5. Notezilla stores data inside a file named Notes or Notes8. They might appear as Notes.db or Notes8.db in some computers.
  6. Copy the backup folder location from Advanced tab and open in Windows Explorer.
  7. You will see that Notezilla keeps multiple backups (date-wise). Open the backup folder which contains the latest and correct data.
  8. Copy the backup file Notes8.db to the main data folder. Make sure you exit Notezilla before copying the data file by clicking on Notezilla icon in the taskbar and selecting Exit from the menu.
  9. Make sure you rename the existing Notes8.db file in the data folder and Paste the copied file with a right-click. Run Notezilla to access the restored notes.

You can follow similar steps when you want to move Notezilla‘s sticky notes data from one computer to another.

Duplicating a sticky note in Notezilla on Windows

Often, users want to create a copy of existing sticky note containing exact text content.

It is possible to duplicate a sticky note in Notezilla without manually copying and pasting the text to another sticky note. This is useful when you wish to work on the copy of a sticky note without touching the original.

Eg: You can keep a set of sticky note templates with standard content & create a copy whenever required.

  1. Right click on the Notezilla icon in the Windows taskbar (next to the clock), choose Notes Browser.
  2. In the Notes Browser, select the sticky note to be cloned from the top notes list (not the bottom sticky notes view).
  3. Now, hold Ctrl key, drag and drop the item to the current memoboard listed in the left “Memoboards” tree view.

“My sticky notes are gone. What should I do?”

Often we get support queries that says ‘My notes are gone. What should I do?’.

In all the cases we have seen, there was nothing to panic about. Actually, the data did not get corrupted or the data was not lost. It was just misplaced due to some change in configuration settings (Windows profile, moving of folders, reinstallation etc)

Here are the different things you need to try when you do not find your notes:

May be the sticky notes are just hidden.

Right click on Notezilla icon in the taskbar (next to the clock) and choose Desktop Notes->Show All Notes.

May be the sticky notes are off your desktop

Sometimes, when changing the display resolution of your desktop, the notes be go off the desktop. Right click on Notezilla icon in the taskbar (next to the clock) and choose Desktop Notes->Layout->Stickers.

May be Notezilla is not seeing the right data folder.

  1. Go to Notezilla’s preferences. To access Notezilla’s Preferences, go to the Notes Browser, choose Advanced->Preferences from the menu.
  2. Click on the Advanced tab and note the data folder where Notezilla is looking for the notes data.
  3. Exit Notezilla.
  4. Search your whole computer (all drives) for Notes.db file. Check the size of this file and its date modified. Find the biggest file and the latest one. Copy this file to the above data folder.
  5. Launch Notezilla and check if you see your sticky notes.

May be the backup folder has your notes data.

Notezilla keeps 5 copies of the backup under the backup subfolder.

Windows 10: C:\Documents and Settings\(user name)\Application Data\Conceptworld\Notezilla\backup\
Windows 8/7: C:\Users\(user name)\AppData\Roaming\Conceptworld\Notezilla\backup\

Each copy is stored in a subfolder, date wise. Go to each folder and check the size and date of Notes.db file. Find the biggest file and the latest one. Copy this file to the above data folder. To know the exact path of the data folder, go to Notezilla Preferences. To access Notezilla’s Preferences, go to the Notes Browser, choose Advanced->Preferences from the menu. The Advanced tab will show the right data folder path.

The quick reply feature in NoteZilla

Quite a few customers have requested for a ‘Reply’ feature in Notezilla. When somebody sends a sticky note, you should be able to quickly reply to the sender using a single click.

Notezilla does have a way to quickly reply. But it is not called ‘Reply’.

When you receive a sticky note, just modify it and press the Ctrl+G key and hit enter to send the note to the sender. What exactly happens here? Ctrl+G brings the ‘Send To Contact’ window. Also, Notezilla automatically selects the sender of the note in the list. Hitting enter picks the selected sender and sends the note over the network.

Grouping favorite documents or folders using RecentX

With RecentX, it is very easy to group recent documents or folders using the “Favorite Keywords” feature.

Lets say that you have the following favorite documents that you wish to group.

  1. Proposal.doc
  2. Timesheet.xls
  3. Errors.log
  4. Meeting.doc

You will new create a new “Favorite Keywords” item as shown below:

It is important to note that the criteria must be set to “Any Words”

 

Creating new sticky notes directly inside a memoboard

Sometimes, you may not want keep the desktop clean, without any sticky notes on it.

In such cases, you can configure Notezilla to create new notes always inside a specific memoboard inside of the Windows desktop.

Memoboard Properties

  1. Go to Notezilla’s Notes Browser
  2. Right click on a memoboard item in the tree view on the left pane and choose
    ‘Properties’
  3. You will see the ‘Memoboard Properties’ window as shown above
  4. Check the item ‘Set as default memoboard’ and press OK
  5. We have set this memoboard as the default memoboard. Meaning, all new sticky notes will be created in this memoboard instead of the Windows desktop.

Troubleshooting sending of sticky notes over network

Sending sticky notes over network using Notezilla is very easy.

But your firewall settings and other network configuration can make it appear as a very difficult task.

You may not be able to send and receive sticky notes. Or you may be able to send but not receive sticky notes.

Here are most common causes of such problems:

  1. Firewall is blocking the program. Make sure that you have configure your firewall program to allow Notezilla/QNP to communicate over network.

    Allow Notezilla through Windows Firewall

    Make sure to first configure your PC firewall to allow running of Notezilla. The firewall on the PC might sometimes not allow to send or receive notes.

    You can search for firewall in Windows search box and you will see “Allow an app through Windows Firewall”. Choose this option and enable Notezilla. If Notezilla is not listed, then click on ‘Allow another app’ and add Notezilla.

    If you are using any other Firewall tool (usually included with Anti-Virus software) then you will have to configure that firewall.

    Make sure you do this on both sending and receiving computer.

    Remember: You must configure the firewalls on all computers that need to send and receive sticky notes.

     

  2. If you are using Notezilla, you must make sure that the ‘Accept Notes Over Network’ option is enabled on all the computers. To access this option, right click on Notezilla’s icon in the Windows taskbar and choose ‘Notezilla Browser’ from the menu. In Notezilla Browser, click on the Advanced menu and enable ‘Accept Notes Over Network’.

     
  3. Your computer may be running more than one firewall programs. If you are using a third-party firewall program, you must make sure that the default Windows Firewall is disabled. You must have only one firewall program running. If you wish to run multiple firewall programs then you must make sure that you have allowed Notezilla in all firewalls

Switching from Notezilla to Notezilla Portable

Notezilla Portable is nothing but Notezilla packaged to run directly from a USB Flash Drive/Pen Drive/Stick so that you can carry the program and all the sticky notes where ever you want on your USB stick.

Notezilla Portable can be downloaded from here.

If you are already using Notezilla on your desktop you may want to transfer all your sticky notes data to Notezilla Portable. Here is how you do it:

  1. Notezilla’s data is stored under the folder C:\Documents and Settings\(user name)\Application Data\Conceptworld\Notezilla\ on Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7 or C:\Users\(user name)\AppData\Roaming\Conceptworld\Notezilla\ on Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7.
  2. Notezilla Portable’s data is stored inside a folder “Data” under its program files.
  3. Just exit Notezilla, copy all the data from Notezilla’s data folder to Notezilla Portable’s data folder
  4. Now launch Notezilla Portable from its folder. You will see all the notes transferred.

 

Checklist Sticky Notes in Notezilla

Notezilla has a cool ability to represent a sticky note as a checklist. Each line in a sticky note begins with a check box that you can tick off.
